The 6th Annual 5k Fun Run was a huge success! Over 300 Granada youth & 40 Vida Joven leaders participated in the 2014 race.Thanks to additional support, we held a national media conference and hosted international runners. Generous sponsors provided participant t-shirts, Fun Run posters, top finisher medals and additional race numbers. The Granada Red Cross and Granada Bomberos monitored the race course, ensuring that runners enjoyed a safe race. Thanks again, 2014 sponsors!
The Vida Joven 5K Fun Run
Vida Joven de Nicaragua, an international Young Life club, seeks to raise up teens from Granada's poorest neighborhoods. Over 150 youth meet weekly at El Puente Mission Base, and El Escudo barrio to share fellowship, play games and learn about Jesus. In addition, Vida Joven leaders are reaching out to 300+ teens at developing clubs in Pantanal, Pancasan, La Sabaneta, calle San Juan del sur y Colegio San Antonio.
In 2009 Joe Carter, an Adventures in Missions (AIM) team member, suggested a 5K Fun Run to support the growing Vida Joven club. We ran with the idea. By 2011, we had held two 5Ks in Granada and a sister race in Charlottesville, Virginia. Thanks to race sponsors, enough funds were raised to support a second Vida Joven club in Escudo barrio. The race is now Vida Joven Granada's largest fundraiser, raising over $7,000 in 2013. We now have three sister races--Athens, Charlottesville and Denver-and hope to continue expanding our impact as Vida Joven outreach grows.
We are thrilled. Teens are rising above gang membership, drug abuse, and harmful relationships to become leaders. They are changing their lives and strengthening their hopes for brighter futures.
